Despite controversies, including a high-profile social media incident that led significant advertisers such as Walt Disney, Sony, and IBM to sever ties with the platform, Musk’s net worth skyrocketed to a staggering $229 billion by the close of 2023. The surge in Musk’s wealth mirrored broader trends in the stock market, particularly within the tech sector, where billionaires collectively enjoyed a remarkable 48% gain, translating to an unprecedented $658 billion increase in their total wealth.

French luxury tycoon Bernard Arnault, who briefly held the most coveted title of the world’s richest person, yielded the top spot to Musk. The shifting dynamics were partly influenced by a global decline in the demand for luxury goods, impacting the shares of Arnault’s conglomerate, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE.

Arnault’s net worth faced a setback, allowing Musk’s financial prowess to overshadow the former’s by over $50 billion. This decline in the demand for luxury goods presented a stark contrast to Musk’s success, fueled by the robust performance of SpaceX and Tesla.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, ascended to third place with a net worth of $178 billion, thanks to Amazon’s strong performance, which reported $19.8 billion in net income in the first nine months of the year. Microsoft founder Bill Gates retained his fourth position, with his net worth rising from $109.5 billion in the previous year to $140.5 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and Meta, witnessed the most significant rise among the top 20, climbing from 25th place in 2022 to sixth place in 2023 with a net worth of $129.6 billion. This surge was attributed to the positive market response to Meta’s strategic moves and Zuckerberg’s decision to invest in the metaverse.

Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google and Sergey Brin, also experienced notable increases in their net worth, securing seventh and ninth places, respectively. Larry Ellison, founder of software giant Oracle, climbed to eighth place. At the same time, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer occupied the fifth position.

Warren Buffett, a perennial figure among the world’s wealthiest, rounded up the top 10 with a net worth of $120.3 billion. Despite his fortune growing, Buffett fell five positions from the previous year.

Notable shifts in the rankings included Carlos Slim climbing to 11th place, becoming the first Latin American on the list. Françoise Bettencourt Meyer, inheriting her mother’s shares in the L’Oréal group, represented the first woman in the top 20, securing the 12th position.

The list also witnessed the return of Spanish businessman Amancio Ortega to the 12th position after falling out of the top 20 in 2022. His wealth surged due to the strong performance of his company, Inditex, which owns brands like Zara.

Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani dropped to the 13th position. In contrast, the most significant drop was recorded by Gautam Adani, who fell from third to 15th place after losing almost half of his fortune following allegations of accounting fraud, later discredited by an investigation.
